Judgement Day looms for the dangerous and destructive North Stoneville proposal, with a decision expected by the end of July.

So it was great to have our Local Member and long-time supporter, Matthew Hughes, drop in as our Committee and Think Tank met after the easing of COVID 19 restrictions.

Matthew likens the fight to save Perth’s Hills from urbanisation, as a visionary challenge, much the same as John Septimus Roe’s ambitious achievement to set aside Kings Park.

We agree!!

At 555 hectares, North Stoneville is 155 hectares bigger than Kings Park.

With an application to rezone North Stoneville back to Rural going before the WA Planning Commission, our community is taking visionary steps to protect our unique environment and to safeguard the people who live here.

Matthew Hughes’ statement

I was pleased to be able to attend a meeting of Save Perth Hills on Sunday and to reaffirm my strong commitment of opposition to the proposed structure plan for the North Stoneville township (SP34). The matter is currently before the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC), which is expected to determine the application by the end of July. It is to be hoped that the WAPC accepts the arguments provided by the Council of the Shire of Mundaring and the community as to why approval of the SP34 should be refused.

Our friends and supporters at The Darlington Review, have written an excellent article about the recent motion by Save Perth Hills’ and the Shire of Mundaring to re-zone the North Stoneville land back to Rural. (link below).

Mundaring Shire Councillor, David Lavell, contributed to The Councillor’s Column (pg18) in the Review and suggested the motion sought to extinguish the land-owner’s development rights.

This comment needs clarification because the landowner (in this case, ...the Anglican Church), does not and has never had ‘development rights’, but, rather, has development ‘expectations’.

While a development at North Stoneville was part of the Shire’s historic growth strategy, it’s now clear that our Shire - and community, have moved away from the dangerous and destructive 1990s urbanisation model, recognising the need to safeguard our community, protect native forest and to save our iconic Perth Hills.

The WA Planning Commission is due to make a decision on the unwanted North Stoneville plan, around the end of July. In the meantime, have a read of the Review’s fantastic snapshot of the latest developments in this monumental 26-year fight to Save Perth Hills...

The proposed dangerous and destructive North Stoneville urbanisation is opposed by all who value our unique Hills environment.

This week Save Perth Hills had the absolute privilege to present, to the WA Planning Commission (WAPC), an inspiring environmental investigation of North Stoneville by a Parkerville teenager who’s identified the area worthy of protection.

Drew Wallace’s three year investigation has rightly earned front page news in this week’s Echo.

The WAPC has confirmed Drew’s report will be formally considered when a decision on the controversial proposal, is made, likely in the next few weeks.

Our community has been fighting, consistently, against North Stoneville for 26 long years.

Save Perth Hills says ‘Good on you Drew’!

It’s heartening to see the next generation stepping up to join the fight to save their future.
